  • Population growth will be moderate.
  • Irrigation use as a category is projected to decline from 76 percent to 56 percent of total water use by 2050.
  • The major cities in the region-Odessa, Midland, and San Angelo-receive their water from reservoirs built on the Colorado River. High levels of dissolved minerals and nutrients necessitate expensive treatment and degrade the quality of the water.
  • Petroleum industry activities in Loving, Ward, and Winkler counties and irrigation practices in Pecos, Reeves, and Ward counties have degraded the water quality of the Cenozoic Pecos Alluvium Aquifer.
  • Depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer in the north part of the planning area is of significant concern, especially for agriculture.
