  • Population in the 17-county area will nearly double between 1995 and 2050, reaching almost 9 million and nearly doubling municipal water demand.
  • Groundwater levels and quality have been lowered over the Trinity Aquifer due to prolonged usage.
  • Urban pressures have impacted surface water quality, leading to low dissolved oxygen content, suspended solids, fecal coliform, and phosphates in the Upper Trinity River Basin.
  • The Texas Department of Health has issued aquatic closures and restricted fishing due to high pesticide and PCB concentrations in fish in several reservoirs.
  • The region has imported, and will continue to import, water from the neighboring river basins to the east.
  • The TWDB projects that new water supply reservoirs may be required in the region for the three major water providers-Dallas Water Utilities, North Texas Municipal Water District, and Tarrant Regional Water District.
