A joint project of the Texas Center for Policy Studies and Environmental Defense, Texas Environmental Profiles is an
information and on-line activism resource for the state of Texas. Our mission is to provide citizens, educators, journalists, and policy makers with easy to understand, current information on
the environment in Texas as whole and communities within the state. To this end we provide explanations of key issues at the state level; values, rankings, and links for over 50 indicators of
environmental quality for all 254 counties; an interactive mapping system; and a take action center.
A great deal of the research information found on the Texas Environmental Profiles web site was first compiled in 1995 in
preparation for the lst edition of the Texas Environmental Almanac. This work was continued and updated for the 2nd edition, published in 2000 by the University of Texas Press in
Austin, Texas. None of this work would have been possible without the generous support of the Meadows Foundation of Dallas, the Houston Endowment, Inc., and the Rockwell Fund of Houston.
The Houston Endowment, Inc., the Rockwell Fund, and the Hoblitzelle Foundation provided support and encouragement
for the construction of this Texas Environmental Profiles web site. This site also depended upon the cooperation of state and federal agencies, too numerous to name here, and several public
interest organizations, and we greatly appreciate all their help.

Founded in 1983, the Texas Center for Policy Studies brings together the people and information necessary to ensure that growth and development in our region enhances,
rather than diminishes, the quality of life for residents. We achieve this mission through three program areas: Regional Growth and Development; Statewide
Environmental Issues; and Texas/Mexico Border projects. The Environmental Profiles project is carried out under the Statewide Environmental Issues program.
Environmental Defense, a leading national nonprofit organization based in New York, represents more than 300,000 members. Since 1967 we have linked
science, economics, and law to create innovative, equitable, and cost-effective solutions to the most urgent environmental problems.
